When Texas Ranger Brett Tucker accidentally derails a wedding, he’s determined to bring the estranged couple back together…but he never dreamed he’d start falling for the bride!
Texas Ranger Brett Tucker hates to break up a wedding, but the groom—notorious criminal Frank Foster—is a danger to any woman. So he busts into the church, guns blazing…only to find he has the wrong man.
STOP THAT WEDDING!
Bride-to-be Kate Denver is appalled by her fiancé’s over-the-top reaction to the innocent mistake and calls off the wedding—for good. Guilt-ridden, Brett’s desperate to get them back on track. But the more time he spends with Kate, the harder he falls…and the more he yearns to prove that he’s her true match in every way.
“Light and airy as cotton candy, this tale charms.”

Cowboy Charm School is the first book in author Margaret Brownley’s new series The Haywire Brides.  What a fun read this was! It’s a sweet western love story with a good mystery and light-hearted humor.  This is a clean romance:  there is enough old-fashioned wistfulness and longing and chemistry to make your heart go pitty-patter.

Told from a dual point of view, we see the perspectives of both candy maker and bride-to-be (maybe) Kate, and wedding crasher and Texas Ranger Brett.  Brett is an upstanding guy who tries his hardest to Cyrano clueless Frank back into Kate’s arms, even though he is clearly falling for her. His attempts to teach Frank how to woo are half the fun in Cowboy Charm School, because Frank, well, he’s a sad case.

“And the note… It meant a lot.
“It did?” He looked and sounded surprised. “I didn’t think you liked all that mushy stuff.”
“I didn’t think it was mushy at all. The flowers…the card…that was the nicest gift you ever gave me.”
He frowned. “What about the egg beater?”
“Oh, I liked that just fine.”
“And the bellows?”
“Most useful.”
Kate feels pressure from all sides (what a tragedy it must have been to be considered close to spinsterhood in your early twenties) to marry Frank;  when Brett interrupts the wedding it gives Kate time to think about what she really wants. Having been friends with Frank since childhood, she has a lot to think about and feelings to sort out. She’s tenacious and loyal, smart and kind-hearted.
“I know it sounds crazy. People like you do important work. All I do is make and sell candy.”
“Don’t say that,” he said. “Don’t even think it. I’ve watched you with  your customers. It’s not just candy you’re selling. It’s…hope.”
The characters are believable and entertaining – and poor Frank Foster, Kate’s husband to be – offers plenty of comic relief (at his expense). He’s just so hapless and out of touch and allergic that I couldn’t stop laughing at every scene he was in.  I enjoyed my first introduction to Haywire, Texas and I can’t wait to see what else Margaret has in store for the rest of The Haywire Brides series.
New York Times bestselling author MARGARET BROWNLEY has penned more than forty-five novels and novellas. She’s a two-time Romance Writers of American RITA® finalist and has written for a TV soap. She is also a recipient of the Romantic Times Pioneer Award.
Her story, A Pony Express Christmas, will appear this fall in the Old West Christmas Brides collection, and book two of her Haywire Brides series will be published May 2019.  Not bad for someone who flunked eighth-grade English.  Just don’t ask her to diagram a sentence.

  1. This sounds so cute — and I love that there is plenty of humor infused in the story. Great review!

    • Thank you! I grew up sneaking my mom’s Harlequin romances, and I kind of love that this story is sweet and clean.
Not that my daughter is really into romances, but if she was, this is the kind of book that I’m fine with her “sneaking”.
Actually – that should have gone in the review too – I love that the character handled a boyfriend’s jealousy and that the male characters were so respectful and upstanding.
