Yes, I am THAT person.

The one that says “I was so busy I forgot to eat today”.

You wouldn’t think it was possible, but it happens all too often. It’s not hat I’m NOT hungry. But working at home and writing – and being a bit absent-minded, to boot, means that quite often, I’ll write right through a meal.

lost-in-my-work

If I’m not writing, I’m trying to catch up on my to do list, and  I have a tendency to say “I’ll eat as soon as I finish ___”. AND since I’m blessed with a short attention span *oh look shiny thing* when I get up from the desk to do one thing, I’ll see the unfolded laundry, and then when I go to put it away I spy an unmade bed, or remember the towels need to be switched out, and then I realized I didn’t fold the clothes in the dryer…yes, you can see where this is headed.

And then the kids are walking in the door from school and I think “where did the day go”.

I do what I can to maintain a healthy lifestyle for my family, and allow us all to make smart choices – and I would, and do…when I make things easier on myself.  Missing meals, however, is a really terrible thing to do to your metabolism (especially when your metabolism said “forget this, I’m going to the Bahamas” or whatever place they escape to.) Skipping meals (and ending up cranky) is NOT what I need to keep my energy and my enthusiasm up.

One way I defeat the “I forgot to eat” debacle is by keeping my freezer stocked with LEAN CUISINE® MARKETPLACE frozen meals! I’m a huge fan of these because they offer up protein-packed options and I can find meals that offer organic ingredient options and even gluten-free options – as I learn more about the effects of gluten on our well-being, I’m happy to replace foods with gluten-free options when I can.

See, I’m a hot-lunch kind of girl. A cold sandwich rarely holds appeal for me, and Lean Cuisine offers up a pretty diverse variety to meet any food mood I might be in, so I can make my head and my tummy happy.  In my freezer on a regular basis are the LEAN CUISINE® MARKETPLACE  Butternut Squash Ravioli and LEAN CUISINE® MARKETPLACE Spicy Black Beans and Rice. (I may or may not scoop this up with corn tortilla chips. Shhh.)

When it gets cold and dreary outside, though, that’s when I reach for the comfort food – and for me, that’s LEAN CUISINE® MARKETPLACE Vermont White Cheddar Mac & Cheese – and that was what was on the ticket for today. While my lunch is heating up in the microwave, I did a quick rummage through the veggie drawer and grabbed some crunchy veg and some fruit.

Nourish What Matters

No matter how busy I am, I take time to feed my whole person – emotionally, mentally, physically. Lean Cuisine has the right idea – check out their video on You Tube: #WeighThis  (Warning: tissue alert.)

Here’s a few ways I nourish my whole self:

Drink more water. Did you know that drinking water helps improve focus, memory and concentration? It also flushes out toxins and boosts your immune system. However, it can be hard to get enough, especially if you aren’t a water drinker.  I’m a perpetual spiller, and I discovered that I actually drink more water when drinking through a straw, so I switched to an insulated cup.  I add fruit to mine – lately, I’ve been adding blueberries and lemon. SO GOOD.

Play around to find the best temperature, too – my doc mentioned that for many people,  it’s easier to drink room temperature water than really icy water!

Keep a gratitude journal.  It doesn’t have to be anything formal – jot it in a notebook, on the bottom of your day planner, in a notes file on your mobile phone – but get in the habit of writing down three things that you are grateful for. It really helps to keep things in perspective, especially on the worst of days. Nourish your outlook.

Take time to breathe. I think the biggest problem today is that we ARE on the go all the time. We don’t take enough time for ourselves, we don’t get as much time as we want with our kids. Figure out what you wish you could do more of and make it happen. Sit and watch a sunset, toss a ball to your happy dog, give your contented cat a good scratch behind the ears, have a cuddle with your little ones. That thing that ends in a contented sigh? Do more of that. Nourish your soul.

Move your self. I’ll never be mistaken for a marathon runner. But as my favorite guided meditation says “A little bit of something is better than nothing”. Walk the dog. Turn on your kids game system and shake it to a dance game. Do crunches or stretches every commercial break when you watch tv. Play with your kids in the backyard. DO SOMETHING.

You’ll feel better for it – even if that means parking at the far end of the Target parking lot when you run in to shop.

Speaking of Target

They are offering LEAN CUISINE® MARKETPLACE entrees for $2 each, and from now until 1/30/2016 there is a coupon for $1.50 off when you buy five. You can find the coupon here – and you can’t miss them in the frozen food section.

The little things you do will add up in the long run. And after all, if you don’t take care of you, who will? So how about it – what will you do to nourish what matters today?

  1. I am THAT person, too. And sadly, it usually starts with breakfast for me because – yep – I’m going to do just one more thing then eat. So many little things we can do to take care of ourselves. Going to fill up my water bottle right now!
