A Letter to my Daughter on her 6th Birthday

Dear Pea,

Today is your sixth birthday. When did you get to be such a big girl?

Everything about you is BIG – your personality, your vocabulary, your creativity. And maybe, your temper. But that’s ok, we’re working on that, along with making my patience, well, bigger too.

Another thing that is BIG is your heart. You are so full of kindness and generosity, it is a joy to see.

You are full of quirky, too. Of course, stripes go with stripes, and polka dots go with stripes; and yes, it’s perfectly sensible in your world to require that a top have ALL the colors found in the stripy leggings and yes the hairbands much match too. I love how everything must go and yet nothing goes together in your world. And of COURSE, everyone needs a tiara. Sequins are NOT just for birthday parties, and yes, please put on your Cinderella dress to walk into town to run errands. And, lets not forget “M-on-the-floor” – how you lay out your clothes on the floor so they look JUST LIKE you when you’re wearing them.

(Yes, she’s even laid out the hairband.)

Thankfully, you haven’t yet gotten so big that you’ve outgrown your love for princesses…and princess dresses. Or any kind of dressing-up, to be honest. And that love is pretty infectious – it has to be, to get your daddy to dress up as a pirate and pillage the house with you on a Saturday afternoon.

And thankfully, you aren’t too big for a cwtch. You are the most loving little girl, always ready with a “smootchy” kiss and a “squeezy” hug…even for the dog, or your big brother, neither of whom doesn’t always appreciate it as much as we do…or they should.

When you are happy, your smile can light up a room.  I love to listen to you sing to yourself as you color – which must be your favorite thing to do. And I love how you don’t just keep those pictures for yourself, but you make them for your friends here, back home, and for us.

You continue to befuddle me, challenge me, delight me, and make me fall in love with you all over again, every single day. You are responsible for more than a few gray hairs on my head, and I wouldn’t give them up for a minute.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl.

I love you to bits.
