We Can Laugh About This, Right, Mom?…MOM?

My mom has a great sense of humor. And she is pretty damn tolerant.

At least, I’m hoping.

Today, I blew it. Totally dropped the ball.

I didn’t call my mom. *hangs head*

Yes, it is Mother’s Day. In the US. Where she lives.

Unfortunately, it is not Mother’s Day in the UK. That was last month.

Yes, we sent flowers. Yes, I sent a card – which I remembered to buy last month (because there are no Mother’s Day cards around in May), although, because it was last month, it went into the post, erm, a bit later than intended.

But. Still. I didn’t mean to spend so much time clearing out closets pre-move. I totally lost track of time. Totally overwhelmed and self-absorbed in the task.

I suck as a daughter.

Somehow, while I am sure she would appreciate the task at hand here, I doubt she’s laughing.

And really, she does have a good sense of humor.

She loves a practical joke.

For example:

When I was in high school, she sent me and my then-boyfriend to the pizza place to pick up pizzas for dinner. We thought we’d be clever, and play a trick on her.

So we asked for an extra pizza box.

And then we took half of one of the pizzas out and hid it in the extra, empty box.

And then brought them in the house, and went about our business, getting out plates and napkins until we heard “What the heck??!!!”. Kyle blustered that, well, he was hungry. And so…we ate a little. Um. A lot.

She looked at us, incredulously. I’m sure she didn’t know whether to laugh or be completely irate. But before she could get totally annoyed, we brought in the other pizza.

And she had a laugh.

* * *

And then when Kyle left later that evening, she laughed again.

Because she had covered his beloved vintage* ’57 Chevy Bel Air in colored crepe paper.  (Mom was too classy to TP a car.)

* * *

So. Mom.  I hope you’re laughing at my discomfort right now. I’m headed to find the phone.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I love you.

*it was vintage – I’m not THAT old*

  1. Jenn, listened to your message. Sorry I missed you. We were out of the house by 12:30. Spent the afternoon with the Sikoras. Noisy but fun with all the little ones. Love you and thanks again for the flowers and phone call. Mom
