Bread Lust

It was only the second day of Lent, and I fell off of the sacrificial wagon already. I was working my way through the farmer’s market last Thursday, putting together the evening meal and thought “I need some good crusty bread”. Never mind that I gave up bread for Lent. The sauce that goes on top of my salmon dish just begs for some bread, either something crusty or….OHMYGODISTHATFOCACCIA??!!

Did I mention that I’m on Weight Watchers, and that I’m doing really well? While you can eat anything you want on Weight Watchers (so long as you point it), I have discovered that I lose my weight much more quickly when I go easy (read: don’t eat) bread.

But I LOVE bread.

And while I’ve given it a good go at really cutting back, Lent presented a great opportunity to really cut back, and Bread gave me something that is really hard to give up, so it had meaning.

But this focaccia bread. You could smell it’s salty goodness. I had to have some, despite the fact that you could use it for a bed pillow, the triangle-shaped pieces were so large.  The fellow in front of me starting talking about getting some parma ham, dicing some tomatoes and adding a little drizzle of olive oil, and how it made a lovely little meal…oh, perfection…and I lost it.

I. Lost. It.

This is what I came home with. Remember? Cutting back on bread? *hangs head in shame*

If it helps to give you a sense of size, my son’s placemat is under that loaf. Nom nom nom….

Then I saw this, and thought that Pea would like it with her tea over the weekend. She does’t like focaccia or brown bread of any sort, but loves white bread.

And, I’ll be honest, I ate it, and I don’t still even know what the hell this is – the man in front of me just called it a bun. I was so out of my mind with bread-lust at that point, I HAD to have it. And, while you can’t tell – it’s probably as big around as a softball.

We won’t talk about my weigh in on Monday. I didn’t gain any weight last week – but I didn’t lose any, either. Needless to say, I’m avoiding the bread stall. Forever.

  1. Hmmmmm…. Bread. I love Bread and chocolate. If those two things didn’t exist I would live only on coffee and be really really skinny.

    • I’m with you on this one. I could live happily on proper bread (and I’m not talkin’ sliced sandwich bread) and chocolate. Nom nom nom.

  2. Oooh! I LOVE focaccia! YUM. 🙂

  3. Hmm you make me want to eat bread after reading this! It is always my downfall when on weightwatchers 🙂

  4. I have been on a very strict diet for 9 days now…I probably would have done the same if I had smelled that bread….it is my kryptonite.
