Spam, Spam – Lovely Spam

Spam really annoys me. I mean, most blogs done properly will have a spam filter, so I don’t understand why people bother.

No, I’m not talking about this kind of Spam:

No, I’m talking about fake positive comments, posted with the hopes that you might actually approve them so that their subsequent (spammed) comments go through unfiltered.

I mean, I  likes me a compliment, but I’m not THAT stupid.

What is really funny, however, is generally the comment itself in relation to the context of the actual post.

For example:

“This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.”

Wow, I could get a big head from that. Except that, well, it was in response to a Wordless Wednesday post. About Macy, the puppy.

Or this one:

“Extremely wonderful article, genuinely useful information. Never ever thought I would obtain the information I want in this article. I’ve been looking everywhere in the internet for some time now and was starting to get discouraged. Luckily, I came onto your page and got exactly what I was struggling to find.”

Um, ok, thanks. Because…this was in response to a Writer’s Workshop prompt about the last thing that made me laugh really hard. If this guy really needed information on preschoolers pooing in the toilet at a home store (it had a clip from “Couples Retreat”) well, um. Yeah. He needs to put down the laptop and walk OUTSIDE. To the real world.

Of course, they aren’t all complimentary. I also received this one”

“I dont really know what you talking about here. This cant be the only way to think about this can it? It seems like you know a lot, so why not explore it more? Make it more accessible to everyone else who may not agree with you? Youd get a lot more people behind this if you just stopped making general statements.”

Harsh. Especially since it is in response to a “Fill in the Blank Friday” post about magazines. And from a guy who apparently can’t use apostrophes.

*sighs*

And the worst bit? Every time I read through the spam comments, this runs through my head, for I feel like the, erm, woman who just can’t avoid the Spam:

Enjoy!

Comments

  1. Ugh…my spam KILLS me. Do they really think I’m stupid? Maybe….but I’m not…so I get the last laugh 🙂

  2. I laugh about this too. I would avoid looking at the spam but I have noticed that out of every couple of hundred or so spam comments there is a legitimate one that somehow got filed there by the invisible spam moderator.

I found your site from British Mummy Bloggers, just wanted to say hi! Im an expat mom too. 🙂

    • Yes, that’s the main reason I look at the spam comments – as it’s typically a new commenter, and I love all my real commenters!
      Are you going to Cybermummy?
