and I’m addicted to social media.

I love Facebook as it has makes it easier to keep up with the goings on of family and friends, both those in the US and local. It has allowed me to reconnect with old friends. It even makes it easier to keep up with school closures!

The games on Facebook, however, are time-sucking traps and I’m a graduate of a Farmville 12-step recovery program.

But Twitter….oh, Twitter.

Could it be the challenge of editing thoughts down to a mere 140 characters? Finding an audience to my rants and/or wry observations?

Or is it the fact that it has served me well as a resource: through it, I found a source for my husband’s Christmas hampers, joined a book club (not virtual, either), discovered new recipe websites?

Or is it simply the community – the people I’ve “met” online and later met in person, a place to ask and answer questions, find support, encouragement and attention?

I think it is all of the above.

The Hubs just doesn’t “get” Twitter. He mocked me for it – until I found the Pembrokeshire Tea Company (@PembTeaCo), who offered to do a custom tea blend and custom packaging to add to his staff Christmas hampers. (I still get compliments on the teas we gave last year. They rocked!)  He doesn’t have a Facebook account, either – he just looks over my shoulder from time to time.

Yes, I tend to be a bit obsessive about checking emails/Tweeting/Facebook updating. Especially since I can do all of this from my iPhone on the go.  Soooo…it might cut into some sleep time. But so does my blogging.

And blogging is my true love. It has been a release, a therapy, a creative outlet. A place of revenge for my c-section scars to record the ups and downs of motherhood.

And if something I write causes a reader to laugh or commiserate or share, well, all the better.

Mama's Losin' It

Today’s post was inspired by Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop.

  1. I just can’t get into twitter. What’s wrong with me?

    • you have a life? (LOL)
Honestly, it takes some time (and involvement) to develop a network of people to tweet with. I don’t tweet nearly as obsessively as I once did, but I’m more committed to my blog…and I had another writer friend tell me that I was probably tweeting my best blog post subjects. She was right!

  2. blogging was my answer for my facebook additction which almost ended my marriage…so…

social media is NOT my friend…but blogging -(social media’s older and more cultured cousin) is my SOULMATE:)

  3. Call me crazy, but the only social media I do is Facebook, aside from the blog. I tried Twitter and couldn’t get into it. I do love me some Facebook though. Maybe a little too much. 🙂

    Great post!

  4. I didn’t get Twitter until I found Tweet Deck!! Now I look forward to #wineparty and #vodkaparty on Friday nights!!! Cheers!

  5. Those FB games, they’re like the Mafia (not to be confused with Mafia Wars)… I thought I was out, but – it- pulled – me – back – in! I’m a sucker for just about any “friend” who says they need more “neighbors.” Sigh. I just started Twitter and blogging, so we’ll have to see how they go.
