Mia and Nattie: LSBBT Book Review & Giveaway

I absolutely fell in love with this Marlene M. Bell’s sweet book Mia and Nattie and can’t wait to share it with my sister, who raises sheep and chickens and hogs, and actually had a similar situation with one of her lambs! (There is nothing cuter than a lamb in a diaper.)

Nattie’s mouth was a little crooked. Her legs were a bit shorter than usual, and one horn was too straight, like a unicorn’s horn.

But Mia thought Nattie was perfect.

On a visit to her grandma’s farm, eight-year-old Mia discovers a newborn, orphaned lamb outside in the cold and takes her to the laundry room, naming her Nattie. As she tries to nurse the lamb back to health, Mia discovers that Nattie is different from the other lambs and struggles to fit in with them like Mia does with other kids her age.

When her grandmother says she will sell Nattie to a neighbor, Mia must come up with a plan to keep her friend around — one that will show the family just how special Nattie truly is.

🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑

Marlene M Bell’s new book Mia and Nattie is based on the true story of the author’s own experience with a preemie lamb, and the love she felt for that special little lamb shines through in this heartwarming book.

Telling a tale of unconditional love, persistence, and how everyone has a place, young Mia brings an abandoned newborn lamb into their house to help her survive. Nattie has a lot of things working against her and Grandma wants to sell her, but Mia fights to prove that Nattie can earn her place on the farm.

Mia had to come up with a plan.

Mia couldn’t break Nattie’s heart.

She wouldn’t break Nattie’s heart.

– Marlene M. Bell, Mia and Nattie

Mia’s devotion to Nattie is lovely and the story shows how she sees past Nattie’s crooked mouth, too-short legs, and wonky horn to the true gifts Nattie has to share. (It’s a message that grownups could benefit from as well.)

The book features simple and soft illustrations with playful touches by Grace Sanford. The expressive faces of both Mia and Nattie help convey the emotions in the story. I especially loved the end paper with its depictions of Nattie in different poses – it’s a sweet hint of what’s inside.

The book itself has a lovely, sturdy hardcover and its pages have a slightly glossy, thicker weight that will hold up to eager hands.

I’m giving Mia and Nattie five loud “baas”.
